Hubris

Over-Confidence, Arrogance, & Pride

Hubris is an unhealthy cocktail of over-confidence, arrogance, and pride. It's an occupational hazard for anyone who exercises power. It can lead them to:

  • Show contempt towards the advice and criticism of others;
  • Over-estimate the likelihood of positive outcomes;
  • Under-estimate the likelihood of negative outcomes.

Without the necessary checks and balances hubristic leaders can bring about destructive and devastating consequences for not only for themselves and their followers, but also for entire industries, national economies, and global geopolitics.

Hubris

Intoxicated With Power

There are plenty of examples of hubristic leaders throughout history (including Alexander the Great, Napoleon Bonaparte, Adolph Hitler) who became intoxicated with power, over-reached themselves and brought about catastrophic consequences for themselves and others.

There are plenty of examples of hubristic leaders on the world stage today both in business and politics who are intoxicated with power and risk bringing catastrophe on themselves and others.

I've published two books on hubris and am recognised widely both by my peers and in terms of citation metrics as one of the world's leading researchers on hubris in business.
